Earth permanently deformed: Chilean earthquakes crack crust

Earth permanently deformed: Chilean earthquakes crack crust It was reported on April 29, 2013, that a Cornell geologist found magnitude 7 or higher earthquakes actually cracked the Earth's crust in Chile. According to United Press International (UPI), the upper plate of the Earth's crust cracked rather than "springing back like elastic" to its original state. "Researchers discovered that a small but significant 1 to 10 percent of the deformation of the Earth caused by 2,000 to 9,000 major quakes over the past 800,000 to 1 million years was permanent."
